Why do some people have a physiological response to the divine? Why do some experience the “anointing of the Holy Spirit” and others do not?

I have always had a difficult time believing in things without some proof. As a scientist, who is also a charismatic Christian, I have also accepted that faith is a gift from God and that faith does not need physical evidence.
